KIDNAPPED SAILOR TO SUE SHIPPING LINE
SHIPS COOK SAYS COMPANY KNEW IT WAS DANGEROUS AND DID NOTHING TO PROTECT WORKERS.
Them's pyrates yonder Cap'n
Richard E. Hicks, the ship's cook aboard the Maersk Alabama is suing the owners of the vessel, Waterman Steamship Corp. for at least $75000, accusing the line of putting its sailors in harm's way by sailing near Somalia.
Hicks says the shippers should choose safer routes, arm sailors aboard the ships, add other safety measures such as barbed wire to prevent boarding and provide better training for such situations.
Perhaps the ship's cook should look for a different kind of work since sea travel has been dangerous since ships took sail. It couldn't be that he is just looking for a fat payday to retire from the kitchen, could it?
